If you’ve ever bought from us, visited us, shared a meal or simply wished us well, this letter is for you.
I’m not writing today on behalf of a brand, or even as the founder of Lakaz Mama. I’m writing to you as someone who deeply believes in what we’re building together, a movement rooted in Mauritian pride, built on trust and fuelled by the love of food and community.
Earlier last year, as many of you know, I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare condition that left me temporarily paralysed for at least nine months. During that time, I was unable to be involved in the daily running of Lakaz Mama.
While I was away, our team in Mauritius faced major challenges, particularly severe staff shortages. To keep things moving, we introduced a tortilla press in production to help speed up the making of our dal puris. But in an attempt to stay efficient, the team began pressing two puris at a time. This caused some batches to fuse together and feel like one thicker piece, unintentionally changing the experience of what a dal puri should be.
Let me be clear, we never compromised on ingredients, and we never cut corners. But we made a process change without fully testing it, and that’s on us. That’s on me.
We’ve fixed it now. Every dal puri is pressed individually again, just like before. But quietly moving on didn’t feel right. That’s not who we are, or at least, not who we want to be.
So this letter isn’t just an apology. It’s also about growth.
That’s why, starting 1st July, we’re launching something new, TrustBack.
TrustBack is our promise to do more than just say sorry. For every 10 packs we sell, we’ll donate a meal to someone in Mauritius who needs it. Because while we grow as a business, we also want to grow our impact.
And yes, if you bought a dal puri, or any Lakaz Mama product, that didn’t feel right, just let us know. We’ll refund it. Write to us at feedback@lakazmama.com or WhatsApp us on +61 450 059 993. No forms, no fuss, just trust.
This is only the beginning…at the end of July, we’ll come back to you with one question,
“What else should we be doing?”…watch this space!
So thank you, for believing in us, for forgiving us, and for helping us become better.
With deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose,
Girish, Simla and the whole team at Lakaz Mama
