The Origin Story
Our journey began one memorable morning, sparked by a simple yet profound craving for home. My wife, pregnant with our first child, and I woke up with an insatiable desire for Mauritian briani. We longed for the rich, aromatic spices that transported us back to the vibrant streets of Mauritius, where food is not just sustenance but a celebration of life, culture, and community. Determined to satisfy this craving, I embarked on a two-hour journey across Melbourne, searching high and low for the authentic briani spice mix that my Mom used to send me. But my search ended in disappointment. It was then that my wife and I made a vow: to bring the authentic flavors of Mauritius to the Mauritian diaspora in Australia, ensuring that no one else would have to face such a longing for the tastes of home.
Our Mission
What started as a personal quest quickly transformed into a passionate mission. We founded Lakaz Mama, which means ‘Mothers Home’ in Mauritian Creole, to import and distribute authentic Mauritian foods. Our goal was simple yet profound: to sell not just food, but memories-each product a bridge back to the good old times, each bite a nostalgic journey to the heart of Mauritius.
